New boat sales sink in JunePosted on
New boat sales plummeted to record lows in June based upon early reporting states, according to the latest numbers from Statistical Surveys.
Preliminary registration data for June showed sales for all fiberglass boats fell 33.1 percent, while aluminum sales were down 24.3 percent. This report is based on 26 states, or 60 percent of the U.S. market.
Fiberglass boats, in the popular lengths of 14-30 feet, were down 36.6 percent in the early reporting states. Unit sales were 9,213, down from 14,539.
Aluminum boat sales declined 24.3 percent on 7,551 units from 9,972 units last year. Personal watercraft sales fell 29.4 percent in the month, dropping from 11,068 units to 7,813 units.
The one bright spot appeared to be states where the oil industry has a strong presence. The research firm noted that Texas boat volume exceeds Florida and California.
“The oil states continue to outpace the rest of the U.S. in new boat sales,” said Aarn D. Rosen, national marine sales manager for Statistical Surveys, in a statement.
“[Oil states] appear to have more consumer confidence than the rest of us,” Rosen continued. “We can only hope that the federal government will stabilize the financial and real estate markets quickly, so our market can return to more normal sales volumes.”
