Changes at the helm of Trade OnlyPosted on
Veteran Soundings magazine chief editor and longtime boater Bill Sisson has been promoted to a new position as editor-in-chief of both Soundings and Soundings Trade Only.
“This dual role extends Bill’s significant editorial talent and marine experience to our Soundings Trade Only brand,” says Soundings Publications editorial director Ian C. Bowen.
“Bill is well-known in the marine industry and highly experienced as a boating media editor. His 28 years with Soundings’ consumer magazine and his own keen interests in the topic as a lifelong boater and fisherman will be focused on increasing the breadth, depth and relevance of coverage, thereby increasing its value for readers and advertisers,” Bowen says.
The tragic death of Trade Only associate editor JoAnn Goddard in April created a large vacuum that needed to be filled. As part of this reorganization, associate editor Richard Armstrong is being promoted to the new role of managing editor of both Trade Only and Soundings, and associate editor Michael LaBella is being promoted to senior editor of both magazines as well. Armstrong and LaBella are veteran marine industry editors with combined experience of more than 30 years.
Trade Only staff writer Beth Rosenberg also has assumed a larger role in the day-to-day operations of the magazine and electronic products. And associate editor Melanie Winters continues to bring 10 years of boating business reporting experience to Trade Only.
Active recruitment is under way to replace at least two staff members to this editorial team.
“I’m very excited by this opportunity,” Sisson says. “Trade Only has for many years served an important role in the industry. My goal is to strengthen and broaden our coverage while continuing to provide an independent, objective voice for all segments of the marine industry. At the same time, we will make sure our rich content is distributed across all media, from print and digital to the Web and other special products.”
Sisson continues: “The industry is going through tough times at the moment, but we’ve weathered other downturns, and we’ll get through this one as well. Trade Only will do its part to provide leadership and forward thinking in the months ahead.”
The new editorial assignments follow the appointment earlier this year of Dean Waite as advertising director of Trade Only. Waite is a 15-year veteran of Soundings Publications.
“These staff changes signal our intent to further reinforce these brands’ leadership positions by both improving their offerings — such as the newly relaunched Trade Only Web site — and by promoting the key staff that make them work so well for advertisers,” says James Causey, vice president of Dominion Media, the parent company of Soundings Publications. “In the coming months, readers and advertisers alike will see new tools and approaches on the Web and in the magazines that leverage their knowledge of the marine industry,” Causey says.
