Chris-Craft temporarily halting production

Posted on

Chris-Craft is stopping production at its Manatee, Fla,. plant for approximately six weeks, beginning in November.

The Sarasota, Fla.-based boatbuilder plans a staggered stop-and-start to “maximize the number of boats that we’re completing,” Meghan Stout, director of marketing and communications, told Soundings Trade Only this morning.

“We’re stopping the production for two reasons. Obviously the economy, which isn’t news to anybody,” Stout said. “And then two, we have an awful lot of our vendors that are stopping production for an extended holiday as well, and so we’re not going to be able to get engines or windshields or any of the important parts.”

Stout said she does not anticipate any layoffs before or following the shutdown.

Employees were given as much notice as possible to allow them to find seasonal positions. Stout said the plant should be back online right after the new year.

In the past, Chris-Craft has always had a shutdown between Christmas and New Year’s.

In August, the company announced it laid off about 85 employees — half in North Carolina and half in Florida, in anticipation of fewer orders from dealers.
