Coast Guard awards contract for new cutters

Posted on

Bollinger Shipyards Inc. of Lockport, La., was awarded an $88 million contract to build a new generation of Coast Guard patrol boats.

The Fast Response Cutter Sentinel Class patrol boat, or FRC, is a 153-foot cutter capable of speeds of more than 28 knots. If all options on the contract are exercised, 34 boats could be built with a total value of $1.5 billion over six to eight years, according to a report in The Times Picayune.

The new work will help stabilize Bollinger’s 12 Louisiana shipyards, which had been operating without a military contract since the Navy last year canceled two littoral combat ships to be built by the company. Bollinger had been building boats on its own and trying to sell them independently, Donald “Boysie” Bollinger, company CEO and chairman, told the newspaper.

The Coast Guard contract will result in the addition of 100 jobs within Bollinger. The first FRC is scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2010 to Coast Guard District 7, based in Miami. It will enter service to patrol the Caribbean.
