Hatteras going with leaner operations

Posted on

Hatteras Yachts is making changes to its production schedule that call for fewer hours for employees, four-day work weeks, and a two-week plant closing in December, a spokesman for Brunswick Corp. confirmed this morning.

The New Bern, N.C.-based boatbuilder usually closes for one week at Christmas but will this year close for two weeks.

Hatteras officials declined to comment, saying they expected to have a statement later today.

Brunswick, parent company of Hatteras, announced last week it will accelerate efforts to resize the company and remove $300 million in fixed costs by the end of 2009.

Brunswick had previously announced plans to close four boatbuilding facilities in early 2009. Those plans now will be accelerated. By the end of this year, plants in Arlington, Wash., and Roseburg, Ore., will be permanently closed, and the Navassa, N.C., plant will be mothballed. The Pipestone, Minn., permanent closure is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2009.

The company said the actions will result in the eventual elimination of approximately 1,450 hourly and salaried positions at these facilities.

Hatteras does not plan to lay off more of its 670-member crew after cutting 325 jobs in New Bern and Edenton in August.
