Mako Marine International closing plant

Posted on

Mako Marine International, a subsidiary of Tracker Marine Group, is planning to close its Forest City, N.C., plant and lay off 125 workers after Christmas.

“The boating business throughout North Carolina has made our production schedule an unattainable objective,” said Chuck Yarbrough, human resources head for Tracker Marine Group, in a letter to state officials.

The boatbuilder had received $150,000 in state incentives to relocate a manufacturing plant in Forest City, according to a report in the Triangle Business Journal. The company was required to bring in 300 jobs and keep them until 2006, which it did, the newspaper reports.

In the past two years, however, the number of workers at the plant has dwindled, according to the Business Journal.

Company officials could not be reached this morning for comment.
