Pentagon urges cooperation to deter piracyPosted on
The U.S. Department of Defense is encouraging military units and commercial ships to work together against piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
Some of the “reasonable self-protection measures” commercial ships can take include active look-outs, evasive maneuvers, and embarked security teams, according to a press release issued by the Department of Defense.
Though the overall number of successful pirate attacks has decreased, the number of attempted attacks has risen, according to Pentagon officials. Of 95 reported attacks on merchant vessels this year, 39 have been successful. Pirates have kidnapped 330 mariners from 25 nations.
