Pirate attack renews concerns in Horn of AfricaPosted on
The attack of the Saudi Arabian tanker Sirius Star by pirates off Kenya came just as officials reported a decrease in the rate of successful pirate attacks on merchant vessels off Somalia.
The combination of military and civilian involvement in the area has reduced the percentage of successful piracy attacks from 53 percent in August to 31 percent in October, according to the Combined Maritime Forces.
Still, the new attack has raised an alarm.
“The situation with the Sirius Star clearly indicates the pirates’ ability to adapt their tactics and methods of attack,” said Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, Commander of Combined Maritime Forces, in a statement.
