Cruising World magazine mourns death of founder

Posted on

Cruising World magazine founder Murray Lloyd Davis died Dec. 4 at age 80.

Davis founded Cruising World 35 years ago and sold it to The New York Times in 1984. It is currently owned by Bonnier Corp, of Winter Park, Fla.

Before starting the magazine in the attic of his house in downtown Newport, R.I., Davis served a stint at Boating in New York and was the first editor of Boston-based Sail.

After borrowing $20,000 from a bank, he and his former wife, Barbara Keefe Davis, started the magazine from their house. After the couple divorced and sold the magazine, Davis retired to travel and to paint.

Davis is survived by daughter, Kate, of Roswell, N.M.; son, Paul; daughter-in-law, Annaly, of Portsmouth, R.I., and Manila, Philippines; sister, Marie Townsend; brother, Ernie, of Berrigan, New South Wales, Australia; and by his partner of 20 years, Constance Metcalf. Barbara Davis died in October.

Donations in Davis’s memory are welcome at the Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport, R.I.
