The Coast Guard and its port safety role

Keeping America’s ports safe is a key function of the Coast Guard and its prevention departments.

These departments operate in major ports nationwide and protect millions of American passengers, countless mariners and millions of tons of cargo each day, according to a recent article in Shipping Digest.

The report takes an in-depth look at how the prevention departments came to be, from the Steamboat Act of 1853, to World War II, to the role the Coast Guard played in protecting America’s ports following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
