U.S. Yacht Shows will continue Annapolis shows through ’14Posted on
United States Yacht Shows says the city of Annapolis, Md. has approved its use of the City Dock and adjacent Susan Campbell Park to conduct the annual U.S. Sailboat Show and U.S. Powerboat Show through 2014.
“We appreciate that the city government and its residents recognize how important the maritime industry is to the economic well-being of the City of Annapolis,” said Susan Zellers, executive director of the Marine Trades Association of Maryland, in a statement.
“The city recognizes that the estimated $50 million annual boat shows’ benefit to the local economy justifies a long-term relationship with our company, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary of the Annual United States Sailboat Show this coming fall,” said Ed Hartman, president of the United States Yacht Shows, in a statement.
Last fall, a group of Annapolis-based investors offered an alternative to the city for the production of the shows.
“We have asked the Annapolis City Council to entertain a competitive bid to produce the annual Annapolis-based boat shows in October starting with the expiration of the current lease in 2013,” Tim Dowling, former operations manager of the boat shows, said at the time.
“We believe we can provide a higher standard of customer service and return to the production values that established these shows as premier events over the many years of their history. We trust that we can do better and generate more income for the city,” he added.
Dowling was joined in this effort by Jim Barthold, former general manager of the shows.
