Higher lake level puts marina back in place

Following spring rains that raised the level of California’s Lake Shasta, the floating concrete Marina at Jones Valley Resort was moved back to its home port location last week.

The 2,000-foot long, 70-slip marina was pushed and pulled by houseboats and workboats at a speed of a quarter-mile per hour.

“Moving a marina of this size takes a dozen boats and a crew of 17 people,” general manager Rich Howe said in a statement.

Because of last year’s dry spell, the marina had been located at the mouth of the Pit River, 2.2 miles away. But steady rains during the last few weeks quickly raised the lake level by 67 feet. The surface rose more than 6 feet per day as 80,000 cubic feet of water per second poured into the lake from the reservoir catch basin.

“As the storm continued, we were approaching a record for the depth of water under the marina,” said Howe. “The anchor chains were played out as far as we like them to get.”
