Charleston boat show canceled

Posted on

The Charleston (S.C.) In-Water Boat Show was canceled this year because of the sagging economy, organizers announced.

The show was scheduled for April 23-26 at Brittlebank Park and the Bristol Marina.

“This decision was extremely difficult for us to make. However, the current economic environment has placed unprecedented pressure on the marine industry as a whole,” said Robbie Freeman of Maritime Events, organizer of the show, on the show’s Web site.

“Having a show under the current conditions does not appear to be in the best interest of the boating community or the marine industry,” Freeman added. “It has been, and will continue to be, our goal to produce a show that benefits all the stakeholders as soon as market conditions improve. Additionally, we want to thank all of our exhibitors who committed to the 2009 show and assure them we will be issuing full deposit refunds as well an additional credit towards the 2010 show.”

Organizers plan to hold the show next spring.

“We are committed to continuing our initial effort to develop a functional, stable, and productive show that is beneficial to the boating community as well as the marine industry,” Freeman said.

    Charleston reports solid show sales

Attendance at the annual Charleston (S.C.) Boat Show was better than expected at the Jan. 23-25 event, with exhibitors reporting sales similar to last year’s show.
“We are thrilled that the current recession did not have a significant negative impact on the show’s attendance or the number of transactions,” show producer Jacqui Bomar of JBM & Associates said in a statement.
Bomar said attendance was down “only a small percentage” from 2008, and she said feedback from dealers and vendors has been positive. A total of 7,952 people attended, according to Bomar.
Next year’s show is scheduled for Jan. 22 -24 at the Charleston Area Convention Center Complex.
