Michigan marinas receive ‘Clean’ designation

Posted on

Three Michigan facilities were recently named Clean Marinas, bringing the number of marinas with that designation in the state to 24.

The marinas are Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor, Village of Elk Rapids; Linwood Beach Marina, Linwood; and Woodland Marina LLC, Brighton. Each participated in workshops to learn about best-management practices, conducted self-evaluations, implemented improvements, and underwent a third-party evaluation by a CMP consultant.

“In all of our business ventures, we always strive to reach for the pinnacle of success. In the marina business, one of those pinnacles is to be designated as a certified Michigan Clean Marina,” said Mike Van Buren, of Woodland Marina, in a statement. “Out of the several hundred marinas in the state of Michigan, only a handful have reached that plateau.

“The other important part of this designation is that you are also doing a great service to the environment,” he continued. “Although it is a process to becoming a certified Michigan Clean Marina, it makes you become aware of not just the big things, but also the small ones that can promote personal and environmental safety.”

The Michigan Clean Marina Program is a joint program between the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Sea Grant and the Michigan Boating Industries Association.
