R.I. boatyard damaged by firePosted on
Four New England Boatworks buildings were heavily damaged Thursday when a fire broke out at the Portsmouth, R.I., yard.
The building where the fire originated was destroyed, though the other three damaged buildings had yet to be evaluated, the Providence Journal reports. The rest of the complex’s 13 buildings were untouched.
Firefighters were called at 5:21 a.m. after a report of smoke in the complex. When they arrived, crews entered a building, but were ordered out when the roof collapsed.
After the collapse, in which no one was injured, about 100 firefighters fought the blaze from outside. In all, at least 10 departments responded to the fire, the newspaper reports.
The cause of fire was not immediately apparent, and the investigation could be lengthy because of the condition of the buildings, according to the report.
