Viking Yachts featured in movie

Viking Yachts is featured in a film that tells the story of how the luxury tax of the early 1990s nearly decimated an industry, and how Viking owners Bill and Bob Healey helped to repeal the tax.

Made by SLU Productions, “The Rising Tide” was shot at Viking Yacht’s New Gretna, N.J., headquarters. It looks at the effect the tax had on the Healey family and the employees of this particularly hard-hit company.

“Viking Yachts was a successful, family-owned boatbuilder prior to the 1990 luxury tax,” said Robert Slusarczyk, managing director at SLU Productions, in a statement. “The Healey family risked their entire life savings to fight the tax and to keep their business solvent.”

Viking Yachts endured hardship after the tax was imposed, according to Pat Healey, president of Viking Yachts. “The entire Viking business, which included more than 2,000 employees in 1990, was nearly decimated as the luxury tax made our products uncompetitive in the world market,” he said in a statement.

The film won numerous awards last year, including Best Documentary at the Pocono Mountain Film Festival; Honorable Mention, Best Documentary at the Wildwood By The Sea Film Festival; Honorable Mention, Best Documentary at The Accolades Competition; and Official Selection at the Independents Film Festival, Cape May Film Festival, Orlando Hispanic Film Festival, and We The People Film Festival.

The Healy family have devoted their lives to making the finest production Sport Fishing Yachts in this USA if not the world. They are one of the few companies that do there best to buying a new apleasant experience from the factory standpoint. I can rember when they took trades to help their dealers sell boats. I sold one of their trades. A real pleasant experience for myself and the person who bought it. Great company and great people.

    Reinstate the Luxury Tax Immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have no sympathy for Viking Yachts.
The boats they build and the people that buy them are conspicuous consumers.
The boats use SEVEN GALLONS of GAS to go ONE MILE
In these ‘green times’ it’s not only Environmentally Unconscionable but bad business
As the saying goes, “The rich keep getting richer”
Not to mention that the majority of their work force consists of illegal aliens
