Viking Yachts says layoffs phase is finishedPosted on
Viking Yachts officials say they believe they are done with layoffs and can soon start bringing people back to work.
Since last year, the New Gretna, N.J., builder has laid off about 550 people, bringing its workforce down to about 800, spokesman Peter Frederiksen told Soundings Trade Only this morning.
“We’re confident that we’re done with layoffs and we’ve got our production at a manageable level,” Frederiksen said.
Layoffs were done in “dribs and drabs,” he said. As boats were finished, a certain number of people would be let go. Workers will be brought back into the company in the same way, as the work allows for it, he said.
“You don’t want to bring back more people than there is work for them to do,” Frederiksen said.
Last week, the company delivered its first 82-footer – a demo boat from the Miami show. Viking also has sold a new 46-footer, which premiered in Miami. It will be delivered in June.
“There are things happening,” Frederiksen said. “There are people out there that want to buy.”
