National Marina Day reaching out to young peoplePosted on
National Marina Day is collaborating with the National Youth Marine Alliance/Preserve America’s Waterways Initiative to help get young people out to the nation’s waters through service projects such as educational programs or waterway cleanups.
The goal is to have 1 million youth volunteer hours.
Organizers of NMD are asking marinas to offer their facilities as projects for the program in coordination with National Marina Day, which this year takes place Aug. 8. The volunteers can conduct waterway cleanups, safety or pollution prevention classes, or just help clean up the shoreline. This is a way to get future boaters to marinas and show them the value and importance of these facilities to communities and our nation’s recreation.
The volunteers will receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteerism.
Those interested in participating should first determine what sort of project needs assistance and then enter that project and its location at www.pawaterways.org.
The National Youth Marine Alliance will line up volunteers. Their workers are insured under them, so marina owners do not have to be concerned with liabilities.
