Waterway group to take part in service program

Posted on

The National Youth Marine Alliance/Preserve America’s Waterways Initiative has teamed with the White House to become a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to encourage volunteer service and civic participation. Preserve America’s Waterways encourages public lands, along with local, state and private sites to establish service projects for youth and enter them at www.pawaterways.org.

Using the Web site, scouting and youth groups may adopt a project in their area or enter one of their own. The national initiative will be conducted through Dec. 31, 2010, with a goal of contributing 1 million youth volunteer hours. This initiative has been made possible in part with funding through an education grant from the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation.

“The award is our way of thanking these volunteers and inspiring everyone in our community to make volunteering a central part of their lives,” said Tom Griffin, NYMA executive director, in a statement. “PAW will protect our lakes, streams, rivers and shorelines so that all Americans may have the opportunity to enjoy our waters for outdoor recreation.”
