Zarchen joined Merrill-Stevens as a yacht broker in 1987 following employment as a professional captain. A Yale University graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering, Zarchen has been a director of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association since 1993, having served as president and secretary, and has been membership and seminar chairman since 1996.
