Life jacket program seeks children’s photos

The BoatU.S. Foundation’s Kid’s Life Jacket Loaner Program will loan out life jackets more than 90,000 times this year at no cost at more than 500 locations across the nation.

Now, the national, non-profit group needs help in creating a 2010 photo calendar with images of children wearing the life jackets and staying safe on the water.

The contest is simple. Borrow a free life jacket from one of the BoatU.S. Foundation’s Kid’s Life Jacket Loaner Program sites, snap a picture of your child in the jacket and upload it to the foundation page on Facebook (or e-mail it to

In November, judges will select the best photos to be featured in a 2010 BoatUS Foundation calendar. The organization also plans to use some of the images to continue to promote the program, which allows parents and boaters to borrow for free a right-sized life jacket for the day or weekend.

    Parents, let’s ensure the life jacket you put on a child is the correct size and not something that will contribute to their drowning.  An oversize life jacket, or even an adult life jacket on a child, will rise up over their face in the event they enter the water.  The safest way to avoid a problem, or submitting a photo that makes you look foolish, is to fit a life jacket on the child then place your fingers under the shoulder straps and lift up.  If the life jacket rises up past their chin, then it can become a “death jacket.” 


    Also, Coast Guard Approved Inflatable PFD’s are authorized for use on recreational boats by a person at least 16 years of age. …and no life jacket is likely to work well if not snapped up and properly secured.
