Winter boat show roundup

Posted on

The Providence Boat Show, known as the first winter boat show in New England, is scheduled for Jan. 7-10 at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

The show primarily presents exhibits of powerboats that appeal to the family cruising and fishing audiences, plus small sailing craft, personal watercraft and inflatables. In addition, there are hundreds of exhibits that feature fresh- and saltwater fishing gear, technology, engines and electronics.

Seminars such as Charley Soares’ “Live Lining for Trophy Stripers” and Captain Bill Brown’s “Blue Water – Really Big Fish” will help people have more fun fishing and cruising. And the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association will be offering career training guidance for students and current workers who might want to work in the marine trades.

“The strength of the Providence Show is in powerboats, especially those in the eight to 40-foot size range that appeals to families and fishermen,” show director Nancy Piffard said in a statement. “We also have a good representation of small sailing craft such as Lasers and Sunfish. We expect the main floor of the show to be jam-packed this year because we have consolidated everything on one floor to make the show a better experience for attendees.”

This year, the Rhode Island chapter of the American Red Cross will receive partial proceeds of the show’s Jan. 9 ticket sales.

In addition, the Red Cross will offer a free CPR/defibrillator certification training course Jan. 9 to the first 26 people who sign up on the show’s Web site.

This year’s Chicago Boat, RV & Outdoors Show is featuring the debut of the Antique Boat and Motor Display. The show runs Jan. 13-17 at McCormick Place.

The Antique Boat and Motor Display is presented by the Blackhawk Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society of America and the Motor Heads of Illinois. This exhibit will highlight one of the premier antique boat and motor collections in the world. Fishermen and storytellers will also have the opportunity to visit Dan Basore’s renowned Antique Fishing Display, featuring items including, tackle, tools, lures and baits dating back to the 19th century.

“The Chicago Boat, RV & Outdoors Show is the perfect venue for the Antique Boat and Motor Display, as many of our attendees are outdoor enthusiasts and avid antique collectors themselves,” said Keith Ogulnick, show manager, in a statement. “This exhibit offers a special uniqueness to the show, as it provides added value to our visitors’ boat show experience and is an outstanding collection that offers a fascinating look at our maritime history.”

Also debuting as part of the antique collection at this year’s show is the Antique Fishing Display. Basore, an antique collector and fishing national champion, will highlight one of the premier antique fishing gear collections in the world in an “Evolution of Fishing in America” presentation.
