Recycled-plastic boat to sail environmental voyage

Posted on

C-MAP electronic charts are helping guide Plastiki, a sailing vessel made almost entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, on a 100-day, 10,000-nautical-mile journey to raise environmental awareness.

When weather patterns permit, the vessel and her crew will depart California, eventually arriving in Australia’s Sydney Harbor.

Along the route, the Plastiki will sail through some of the world’s most remote and fragile ecosystems, sharing the effects of warming and waste on the oceans and the planet.

“As a company rooted in global navigation, we’re extremely aware of the important environmental issues facing our planet and its many people,” said Michelle Buckalew, Jeppesen Light Marine senior marketing manager, in a statement. “The voyage of Plastiki is not only a compelling adventure; it will help focus worldwide attention on important ecological issues.”
