Sailor seeks used sails for Haiti

Posted on

Maine sailor John Eide is organizing a drive to collect used sails to be shipped to Haiti for use in makeshift shelters.

“The rainy season is starting early this year in the Caribbean, so the faster we can get our used sails to Haiti, the better off the estimated 770,000 homeless will be,” he said in a request for assistance.

Maine Sailing Partners and Pope Sails & Rigging are all dropoff points for the sails and Portland Yacht Service will accept sails during the Maine Boatbuilders Show.

The sails will then be trucked to Miami where two organizations, Haiti-Life and Shake-a-Leg, have the infrastructure in place to ship the sails to Haiti.

The deadline for donations is March 19.

Thank you so much for picking this good cause up and forwarding it to your page. A needed clarification about the significance of the 19th! Maine Sailing Partners will accept sails until the 19th when the Boat Show starts. On the 19th through 21st THE DAYS OF THE BOAT SHOW the Maine Boatbuilders Show will have a drop off area in Building #11, that is the building at the top of the drive way where the Maine Maritime Academy Alumnae marine flea market is held.
Let’s see what we can do to make a small difference in a horrible situation. Good for John Eide!
    Thank you again. Phin Sprague

We are now reading about this and we applaud this effort.  How can sailors in the Caribbean contribute to this worthy cause?   Used sails are still needed in Haiti.  Are there collection points in the Caribbean?  Can this be organised?
