Entries sought for DAME fee donation

Posted on

METS and Superyacht Pavilion organizer Amsterdam RAI invites government- approved, marine-related public charities to apply for the registration proceeds from the Design Award METS competition.

“Since the decision was made in 2007 to charge a fee of 150 euros (about $208) per product registration and donate the sum total to charity, on the advice of the exhibition committee we have taken responsibility for selecting a worthy cause,” METS/SYP senior product manager Irene Dros said in a statement.

“Now that the process is established, we’ve decided it’s time to give charities whose work is connected to the international leisure marine industry an opportunity to apply for the donation,” she added.

To date, the DAME prize has raised about 18,000 euros (about $25,000) for worthy causes each year. The annual donation varies according to the number of entries registered.

Four charities have received funds so far: Batavia Yard, the Netherlands, for building a replica ship; International Federation of Disabled Sailors, United Kingdom, the international association for disabled sailing; AMREF Flying Doctors, Africa; and the Whisper Boat Building Academy, a boatbuilding school in South Africa for people with disabilities.

All applications must be received by April 20. The exhibition committee will assess them in May. The DAME donation will be announced and presented at the breakfast briefing on Nov.15, the official opening day of METS 2011.

METS takes place Nov. 15-17 in the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre.
