Tropical Storm Arlene forms in southern Gulf of Mexico

The first named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season has formed over the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Arlene is slowly organizing and is expected to strengthen today as it moves toward Mexico.

As of early this morning Arlene had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles an hour and was about 190 miles east of Tampico, Mexico. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the coast of northeastern Mexico from Barra de Nautla north to Bahia Algodones.
