Groups offer upcoming marine technical courses

The American Boat & Yacht Council will host three technical seminar sessions next week at the Marine Equipment Trade Show at the Amsterdam RAI.

The seminar schedule is as follows:

Marine Applications of Lithium Batteries Today

Noon, Wednesday

Presenter: Ed Sherman, ABYC director of curriculum

What’s New in Marine Composite Applications

2 p.m., Wednesday

RAI Room E104

Presenter: Scott Lewit, president and founder, Structural Composites Inc.

Propeller Selection and Sizing

10 a.m., Thursday

RAI Room E104

Presenter: Dave Gerr, noted designer/author and director of Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology board of directors

“We expect these three seminars will be well attended so we can continue to offer more education and training experiences and options to those attending METS in future years,” ABYC president Skip Burdon said in a statement. “These three topics and presenters are very dynamic and timely, so we are looking to fill the rooms up with experts so as to carry on interactive discussions throughout the presentation.”

Hugh Lupo, owner of Norwalk, Conn.-based New England Marine Electronics, is teaching a course on the basics of marine electronics at Housatonic Community College, beginning in January.

Lupo has more than 50 years of experience in the field. He is the Northwest regional director of the National Marine Electronics Association and sits on the board of its education committee.

The course will cover basic electric and radio theory, antenna and wave propagation theory and marine electronics service and repair. At the end, student will take an MEI exam and receive certification from the NMEA and an associate membership in the group.

The series of eight lectures begins Jan. 5.
