Sailing group undergoes name changePosted on
Marking a decade of growth and an ongoing commitment to community service, the SHYC Sailing Foundation recently announced development plans and a new name to go with them: New England Science & Sailing.
Its curriculum is grounded in the institution’s core values — not simply to teach sailing, but also to have students learn about the sea and undergo the process of self-discovery that engenders such lifelong attributes as self-reliance, dependability and respect for teamwork, whether on the water or not, the group said in a statement.
“The name change was intended to underscore those values as NESS matures. It was chosen to reflect the foundation’s dual commitment to offer the highest-quality programs while making them available to anyone,” according to the foundation. “Since 2007, NESS has supported and hosted Special Olympics sailing events in Stonington (Conn.) Harbor. From its inception, the board of directors has endeavored to offer financial assistance to any applicants that need it.”
Foundation president Spike Lobdell also recently announced that New England Science & Sailing was awarded a $250,000 scholarship grant by the National Recreation Foundation to make on-water programs accessible, regardless of applicants’ financial means.
“This award is a vote of confidence and an enormous boost,” Lobdell said in a statement. “We are an inclusive organization with a mission to serve an extended community.”
