Massachusetts charity donates to sailing group

A Massachusetts charity recently made a $10,000 pledge to a sailing non-profit organization.

Figawi Charities pledged the funds to Hyannis, Mass.-based Sail Cape Cod, a fledgling organization whose goal is to bring sailing and other water sports to the local community, including the disadvantaged and people with disabilities.

“Clearly Figawi recognizes what Sail Cape Cod can do for those in the community who do not have the opportunity to experience the waters around us,” Sail Cape Cod president Charlie McLaughlin said in a statement. “Gifts such as this will allow us to assemble the necessary boats and equipment and hire qualified staff to get the program up and running.”

The Figawi Charities committee operates an annual fundraiser in May to support community non-profit organizations, as well as the Figawi sailing race between Hyannis and Nantucket during the Memorial Day weekend.

Cape Cod-based Figawi Charities recognizes that boating is not broadly available to the community at large on Cape Cod, said David Crawford, chairman of the Figawi board of governors.

“Yet being on the water is an exhilarating and confidence-building activity that has many benefits for individuals, especially those who may be struggling to achieve life goals,” Crawford added.
