Organizers tout first Annapolis spring sail show

Show producers are deeming the first Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show a success.

“We wanted to bring the substance and excitement of our fall tradition to the spring season,” United States Yacht Shows general manager Paul Jacobs said of the April 27-29 show. “We considered that it might take time to build the spring show, so we were thrilled that the inaugural event was so well received by both exhibitors and boating enthusiasts.”

Several thousand people attended the event, which featured more than 50 sailboats in the water, more than 100 nautical vendors and service providers and more than 40 flea market participants.

The three-day event created a nautical festival atmosphere and included social and educational activities. Cruisers University — classes for current and future cruisers — was combined with the sailboat show. Participants represented 17 states and Canada.

Yacht builders and brokers said boats were sold and quality leads were generated. Finance companies took multiple applications. Downtown merchants noted an unusually busy weekend and the city benefited from income generated by renting space to the show’s producers and from the tax revenue of admissions.

Plans are under way for the 2013 Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show.
