Former Latitudes & Attitudes publisher launches new magazine

Posted on

Bob Bitchin, the former publisher of Latitudes & Attitudes, is seeking readers for his new publication, Cruising Outpost, who are willing to commit to a five-year subscription.

“As you are aware, we are starting from scratch to bring you Cruising Outpost,” Bitchin said in an email sent to subscribers to his online forum.

The five-year publication costs $250.

“We know money doesn’t grow on trees, but the sooner we raise the cost of printing, the sooner we can start the print version,” Bitchin said.

Latitudes & Attitudes, the popular magazine that celebrated the sailing lifestyle without focusing on boats, ceased publication in June.

The magazine that was launched by Bitchin, whose birth name is Robert Lipkin, and his wife, Jody, in 1996 was sold to Sextant Publishing, which is run by CEO Dennis “DJ” Doran, in January, according to a Bitchin email to Soundings Trade Only.

Capt. Woody Henderson, who was on the original staff of Latitudes & Attitudes, wrote June 20 in his blog, captwoody.blogspot.com: “Today, we find ourselves locked out of the office.”

Former editor Sue Morgan told Soundings Trade Only she didn’t know where the publishers were.

Morgan will stay on as editor of Cruising Outpost.

“We can’t print a magazine until we’ve had enough people subscribe online to make one of those print bills, and those are pretty hefty,” Morgan told Trade Only. “We’re still in there plugging away, trying to pick up pieces and make something happen.”

Bob always works very hard and has fun doing it! I am sure there new adventure will be just as great as L&A. We the readers will love it.

Bob , Sorry your mountain retirement did not quite work the way you wanted it to , AGAIN!

I am all in for BOB and Jody. They have helped make sailing , boating , and being in the boating business, more fun for more people than any other couple ever. Go Bob and Jody! We are all with you. Tom Brownell BROWNELL SYSTEMS INC.

We, as cruisers who are retired can contribute small amounts – and would dearly love to give the whole amount. Getting the lawyers involved in the former mag is such a waste of dollars and energy – and whatever the issues were about, it was obvious that Bob and Jody are more than special people. They change lives for the better and the world needs people like them. We will support the new endeavor any way we can. Bobbie & Robert

It would make more sense to start the magazine as an ezine, get some money coming in without the costs of a print publication. Then add the paper when everything gets going well. $250 seems a little steep for a start-up magazine subscription that is the off shoot of a previous magazine that was sold out by the same people starting this one.

i JUST FOUND OUT. i ORDERED A SUBSCRIPTION BACK IN MAY AND ONLY GOT ONE ISSUE. nOT SURE i WOULD GIVE UP ANOTHER $250 IN HOPES OF A SECOND ISSUE SOME DAY. i LOVED LATTS AND ATTS MAGAZINE, i COULDN’T WAIT EVERY MONTH TO READ IT, SEE THE ADVENTURES BUT BUT THE BEST PART, THE PART i LOOKED AT THE MOST WAS IN THE CENTER EVERY MONTH. uNDERWAY WAS A WINDOW TO THE PLACES i COULDN’T ALWAYS BE. i WILL THINK ABOUT THE TWO FIFTY.

Lats and Atts was my favorite magazine that was yearned for between copies. The magazine business is torturous and profits marginal but Bob’s stuff is worth it. I signed up as in investment in my sanity. Bob Bitchin is a hell of a lot cheaper than my shrink and pills. Look at it this way: I also invested in Citibank and lost, Johns Manville and lost, and Winnebago and took a bath. Bob’s new rag is a cheaper investment and the potential rewards are much better too.

Yeah– Why should I pay or donate $250. for a maybe. I paid for 6 years subscription from Jan 2008– thru Jan 2014. Bob Bitchin should be honoring those of us who got shorted on our previous subscription!

Bob should honour our old subsciption monies. I feel like i got ripped off. i have no money to “start a new magazine” Paid $170 for 1 magazine, nice!

I bought my most recent subscription to Latitudes & Attitudes at the Miami boat show in January. Bob was there in the booth. I received one magazine and it was expensive because they closed down. I have read the magazine for many years. I have a time line to talk about. Bob spent a year refitting the Lost Soul using very little of his own money because advertisers donated time and products so they could be mentioned in the magazine. Bob sold the Lost Soul when the project was complete. Nice profit there I’m sure. Bob buys the Lost Soul back. For less then he sold her for? Bob sells Latitudes & Attitudes. Doors close. I am very sorry for those employees and their families who where jobless overnight!!!

WOW Bob. I could care less about my subscription, but, I am concerned about the people who worked for you. I hope I am wrong about what I think you did. I think you spent two years lining your pockets and then jumped ship, not caring who you hurt.

    Please tell me I’m wrong.
