Second electrocution webinar set for next week

Posted on

The American Boat and Yacht Council and the Association of Marina Industries are partnering to present additional safety information on electric shock drowning via a free live webinar.

“Electric Shock Drowning — The Invisible Killer Part II — Marina Electrical Safety,” will be held July 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. EDT.

The webinars come on the heels of the deaths of four children in two separate lake electrocution accidents.

ABYC received an overwhelming response to “Electric Shock Drowning — The Invisible Killer” webinar held earlier this month by Kevin Ritz, an ABYC certification instructor who lost his 8-year-old son, Lucas, in 1999 to electric shock drowning.

That webinar addressed the aspects of the shore to boat connection and left many waterfront property owners and marina managers asking what they can do.

AMI will be providing information tailored for the marina through instructor Chris Dolan. An application engineer with Marina Power & Lighting and Eaton Corp., Dolan oversees the design and development of more than 600 marina plans a year.

One of the many safety components to be discussed will be the Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter, which functions similar to ground-fault outlets installed in homes. It responds to a potential fault by tripping the main circuit breaker and cutting power to the boat.

“We would like to see the Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter on every boat and at every marina,” ABYC president John Adey said in a statement. “The Association of Marina Industries is the perfect partner to help us educate on the dangers of electric shock drowning from the marina owner/operator’s perspective.”
