Minnesota dealer offers invasive-species removal

Posted on

Minnesota Inboard Water Sports is partnering with the Christmas Lake Homeowners Association to provide an invasive species decontamination site for boaters using Lake Minnetonka, Lake Minnewashta, Christmas Lake and other lakes in the area.

Minnesota Inboard established the decontamination service in Excelsior in an effort to stop the spread of zebra mussels and other invasive species.

“This new service is available from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., seven days a week, and we specialize in decontaminating wakeboard boats,” Joe Mueller, of Minnesota Inboard, told the Lake Minnetonka Patch. “Our customers and other boat owners want to do the right thing and now they can.”

Boats can be decontaminated while owners wait or can be dropped off and picked up later. The new service is a joint venture between Minnesota Inboard and the homeowners association.

The state Department of Natural Resources has limited free decontamination capabilities, but they are not permanently stationed and their locations are not announced. Lake Minnetonka Patch reported that it has been a challenge for boaters who frequent lakes infested with zebra mussels to get them removed and avoid transferring the mussels to other lakes.

“This is an important step in the war against [aquatic invasive species],” homeowners association president Joe Shneider said. “No longer does a boater need to play the DNR’s game of ‘Hide and Go Seek’ to find where the DNR’s AIS decontamination units are today.”
