Trinity Yachts boatyards survive Hurricane Isaac

Posted on

trinity0831Trinity Yachts, which had two yards in Hurricane Isaac’s path – in New Orleans and Gulfport, Miss. – reports that they survived the storm with minimal damage.

“Both yards and all employees are doing fine,” the company said Friday in a statement.

Trinity said the New Orleans yard was hit by a Category 1 hurricane and the Gulfport yard was hit by a tropical storm with a 9-foot storm surge. There was no damage to the Gulfport yard or to any of the yachts and other boats under construction, and that yard was to reopen today.

The New Orleans yard took a direct hit, but recently completed floodgates did their job protecting New Orleans. The storm surge was 11 feet, but the shipyard is inside the federal government’s post-Katrina $14.5 billion levee protection system. Only about 18 inches of water came over the bulkheads, the company reports, and that was not a problem for the shipyard.

The only damage to the New Orleans yard was to some roof panels of the covered wet slip, which was unoccupied. The yard will reopen next week when the city restores power.
