This roundup of upcoming shows and events includes news from Boat Show Düsseldorf and the Toronto International Boat Show.

The 44th International Boat Show Düsseldorf, or boot 2013 Düsseldorf, will continue the industry’s focus on fair trade activities.

The show, which takes place Jan. 19-27 at the Düsseldorf fairgrounds in Germany, features 1,650 exhibitors from more than 50 countries.

“In view of the tense situation on the international markets, and particularly in southern Europe, all eyes of the industry are now on [the show],” show director Goetz-Ulf Jungmichel said in a statement. “Numerous exhibitors want to book extra space. We are confident that the 17 boot halls will be filled pretty well to capacity and expect a lot of  innovations and boat premieres, and even a number of new arrivals from the international yacht scene.”

The German boat and water sports market is in a much stronger position than that of other European countries, particularly the Mediterranean region, which has been strongly affected by the debt crisis, according to the Germany Marine Federation.

About 40 percent of the exhibitors at the show will be from countries other than Germany. The largest foreign contingent will be from the Netherlands, with 140 exhibiting boatyards, equipment and service providers, followed by France and Italy with 50 exhibitors each.

The German federation said customers are showing a preference for value-retaining upmarket motor and sailing yachts.

Entrance passes for boot Düsseldorf 2013 can be ordered online in advance of the show at reduced rates. The tickets also allow free use of all public transportation during boot Düsseldorf 2013 within the public transportation network of Düsseldorf.

The 55th annual Toronto International Boat Show, Canada’s largest marine marketplace, returns Jan. 12-20 at the Direct Energy Centre’s Exhibition Place.

Boats for every lifestyle and budget — fishing, cruising, sailing, paddling and watersports — will be on display, along with marine products and services. On-the-water activities include boat rides, wakeboarding and boat-handling demonstrations on the world’s largest indoor lake for boaters and more than 140 special guest seminars.

On Jan. 11, a preview night includes access to the show without the crowds, with proceeds going to support children’s charities.

“Embrace the VIP experience and enjoy live entertainment, delicious food and beverages and the opportunity to bid on more than 100 silent and live auction items,” show organizers said in a statement. “Since 2000, Special Preview Night has raised more than $585,000 for initiatives that are close to the hearts of the boating community.”

Keynote speaker Alyson Schafer will present “Boating Provides What Every Child Needs to Succeed” at 1 p.m. on Jan. 12. A longtime, multigenerational boater, Schafer discusses her own childhood as well as raising her children at a boat-only access cottage and how these boating experiences have shaped her and her children.

Schafer, Kathy Buckworth and Maureen Dennis will present “Confessions of Boater Mammas,” discussing the hidden benefits and parenting strategies of raising kids on the water. The three prominent Canadian mommy experts and boating families share their photos, stories, tips and advice on how to make it all work at 3 p.m. on Jan. 12.

A free five-hour offshore cruising seminar with John Neal and Amanda Swan-Neal, who spend seven months at sea annually, will focus on boat selection; priority and optional outfitting; rigging and sails; security and piracy; and the cost of cruising.

Children ages 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.
