Massachusetts fishermen presumed lost at seaPosted on
The Coast Guard called off a search in Massachusetts Bay for the 45-foot scalloping boat Foxy Lady II and its crew of two about 6 p.m. Wednesday, ending the effort to find the vessel and its two crewmembers.
Surviving family members say the Coast Guard personally informed them that the 25-year-old captain and his 50-year-old crewman are presumed to have been lost at sea.
The Foxy Lady II left Gloucester, Mass., on Saturday for a day trip to Stellwagen Bank. The captain had text-messaged his girlfriend on Saturday morning until about noon; she contacted the Coast Guard on Monday morning when the boat had not returned.
The Coast Guard said the vessel had not issued an SOS or any electronic emergency signals. The Coast Guard searched Massachusetts Bay from Monday through the daylight hours Wednesday. Crews searched more than 2,800 square miles with no sign of the fishermen.
The Coast Guard said a lifeboat rescue pod that belonged to the vessel was found Tuesday in a marshy area of the Saugus River.
