T-shirt offered to raise funds for Sandy damage

The founders of www.bdoutdoors.com are offering a special T-shirt to help raise funds to rebuild the fishing areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Sandy dealt a devastating blow to anglers in the Northeast, notably in New York and New Jersey. The storm struck the coast at the beginning of the fall run of striped bass. Marinas were obliterated, tackle shops were washed away and coastal access was destroyed. The damage to recreational boats alone topped $650 million.

“Even though we’re based on the West Coast we’ve got a lot of good friends and forum members out in New York and New Jersey who are hurting right now,” BD president Ali Hussainy said in a statement. “We wanted to do something to help.”

Joe Cermele, fishing editor at Field & Stream magazine and a New Jersey native, proposed that BD, which describes itself as the largest saltwater community on the Internet, work with a New Jersey artist to create a fishing T-shirt to raise money for Restore Our Shore, a nonprofit organization working to rebuild the Jersey Shore.

The Jersey Shore artist known as “Skullboy” delivered a powerful design depicting a striped bass within a bleeding heart. The message is simple and to the point — Rebuild and Fish.

“In 24 hours, at the beginning of what was shaping up to be a killer fall striper run, Sandy destroyed almost every tackle shop, dive bar, and marina that were like second homes to me. None of us were prepared for something so devastating,” Cermele said in a statement. “I remember hearing stories from my grandfather about storms in the ’50s and ’60s where the bay met the ocean across the barrier islands of New Jersey. I never could really get my head around the idea and I never thought I’d actually see it in my lifetime.”

The shirts retail for $19.95 and are available at www.bdswag.com.
