Precision Boat Works marks 35th anniversary

Posted on

Precision Boat Works, the builder of eight Precision sailboat models, is marking its 35th year of continuous operation by brothers Bill and Richard Porter.

The business started in a small shed in 1978 and the first Precision was a 20-foot, full-keel flush deck sloop, the company said. The sailboat product line through the years has included 14 production sailboats from 13 to 28 feet, with custom projects as large as 100 feet.

Precision is also the licensed builder of the popular Colgate 26 sailboat in use worldwide by hundreds of private owners, as well as in service by the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

“Our commitment to producing affordable quality entry-level sailboats is essential to our 35-year success,” Precision president Bill Porter said in a statement. “We focus solely on small boats that will introduce new people to the sport of sailing.”

“Decades of long-term relationships with our many suppliers, such as Harken Yacht Equipment, Dwyer Masts, Jim Taylor Yacht Design, SECO South Rigging, to name a few, assisted with our years of thriving in the highly competitive sailboat industry,” vice president Richard Porter said in a statement.

“In addition, businesses are built by people; Precision’s longevity is in no small part due to the hard work and dedication of production staff. Many of the team have been here constructing Precisions for over 20 years. Collectively, over 200 years of small sailboat construction experience is featured at Precision.”

Congratulations to the Porters and their Precision team for 35 years in this business. I have always appreciated their hard work and dedication to making a strong, safe, affordable, sailboat. I really enjoyed the 28 when it was in production during the 1990s. Great job!

Congrats on a job well done. You have survived many others and grown to be one of the major builders. You should be very proud, as those of us who remember when you started are.
