Viking Yachts opens new power plant in New JerseyPosted on
Viking Yachts’ tri-generation plant, a combined heating, cooling and electrical power project, is now in operation at its headquarters on the Bass River in New Gretna, N.J.
The company expects to reduce all of the plant’s utility expenses by 25 percent as a result.
Utilizing six Capstone C65 micro-turbines fueled with natural gas, the newly installed power system can generate as much as 40 percent of the company’s yearly electrical usage while also being capable of providing all heating and cooling needs for its 75,000-square-foot Building 1.
The building houses offices, the metal and paint shops, the warehouse and shipping departments and research and development areas, home to Viking’s two five-axis milling machine profilers, which are used to produce plugs for fiberglass molds.
Viking’s tri-generation system will deliver electrical power and the exhaust heat will be used to produce hot water to heat the plant and offices. During the summer, the extracted heat will pass through absorption chillers to provide air conditioning.
The combined heating, cooling and electrical power project, similar to the solar panels installed on Buildings 5 and 5A, are part of Viking’s philosophy and commitment to build better boats by reinvesting in its future through reduced utility costs and controlled greenhouse gas emissions.
Viking Yacht Co., founded in 1964 by Bill and Bob Healey, continues as a privately owned and family-operated business building sportfishing convertibles from 42 to 92 feet.
The company’s most recent introduction is the 55 Convertible, which premiered in October at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Viking said it will introduce the 62 Convertible and 62 Enclosed Bridge Convertible in February at the Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami.
