MIAMI: Marlow debuts Mainship 32Posted on
MIAMI BEACH — David Marlow introduced the Marlow Mainship 32 at the Miami International Boat Show as the first in a revival and upgrade of Mainship’s trawler line.
The yellow-hulled sedan trawler — named Buttercup — is the first new design from Mainship since Marlow, the chairman of Marlow Yachts, purchased Mainship and Hunter sailboats’ assets out of bankruptcy last August.
“There is a market here,” Marlow said Saturday evening at a reception at Sea Isle Marina in Miami. “What we have to do is find that market and rebuild it.”
Marlow Mainship’s market will be an upscale one, he said. “We intend to build better boats than Mainship ever built.” Buttercup has a strut keel, which Marlow pioneered for efficient running for his expedition yachts, and is powered by a pair of 70-hp Yanmar engines. The boat tops out at 15 knots fully loaded and burns 3.8 gallons an hour per engine with its throttle wide open.
“That’s pretty phenomenal,” Marlow said. With a fuel capacity of 200 gallons, the 32 has a range that can take it from Palm Beach to New York, Marlow said.
The Mainship has a fold-down “swoop transom” for boarding. Buttercup sleeps three, carries eight and has 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom. It’s simple, efficient and roomy, with classic lines. “It’s a great couples boat,” Marlow said.
He expects to debut another Marlow Mainship in the “upper 30-foot” size within 150 days. “In a year we’ll have a full product range,” Marlow said.
Marlow said he has 11 dealer applications, but has not yet appointed any dealers for the Mainships. The 32 retails for $240,000 to $300,000.
Marlow introduced the Hunter 40 — the first in a revitalized Hunter line — at Annapolis and sold 10 boats. “We’ve just shipped the 125th [Hunter] under my ownership since July,” he said. “The market has been good to us.”
