Report says marine deaths increased in 2011

Posted on

Marine fatalities rose in 2011 from 2010, with recreational boating accounting for nearly all of the deaths, according to preliminary figures released by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Transportation fatalities in the United States declined in 2011 by about 2 percent, despite a 10.65 percent increase in boating deaths.

Recreational boating fatalities increased 12.6 percent in 2011 and continues to account for nearly all marine fatalities, the NTSB reported.

The data indicate that overall transportation fatalities decreased from 35,043 in 2010 to 34,434 in 2011. There were no airline fatalities in 2011.

However, deaths on the nation’s waterways rose in 2011 from 723 to 800, the NTSB announced. Fatalities from recreational boating accidents increased from 672 to 758 in 2011 from 2010.

“Transportation accidents remain one of the nation’s leading causes of death,” NTSB chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman said in a statement. “We can do better, which is why the NTSB shines a light on key safety issues each year through the Most Wanted List of transportation safety improvements.”
