South Florida waterway cleanup scheduled for MarchPosted on Written by Michael LaBella
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida has announced a partnership with the Florida Inland Navigation District for the association’s 36th Annual Waterway Cleanup.
The event is scheduled for March 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 26 designated cleanup sites across Broward County. Two former sites, Markham Park and Himmarshee Canal, are being resurrected from previous years.
“Where Green Meets Blue” reflects the ideals of environmental responsibility that the marine industry community has consistently demonstrated since the event’s inception, the trade group said. The event also hosts an educational short-story and essay-writing contest open to all students in the Broward County Public Schools.
The MIASF said its annual waterway cleanup is Broward County’s largest environmental public awareness campaign and community effort to keep the waterways clean. Each year the event attracts nearly 2,000 volunteers.
The trade group said the Trash Bash after-party also will return this year after an impressive attendance in 2012, with notable reggae artist Uncle Sam performing live. The Trash Bash is a volunteer-only celebration featuring guest speakers, educational and environmental awareness awards, local art displays and a celebration for a job well done. This year’s event will once again be fêted at The Downtowner Saloon on the New River in Fort Lauderdale.
