Kansas bill seeks to cut boat taxes

Posted on

The property tax on boats and other watercraft in Kansas will be cut from 30 percent of appraised value to 11.5 percent next year if Gov. Sam Brownback signs a bill the House and Senate approved last week.

Boat taxes would be phased down to 5 percent in 2015 and beyond, according to an article in the Wichita (Kan.) Eagle.

The move comes after 54 percent of Kansas voters approved a constitutional change last fall allowing the legislature to set up a new watercraft tax system. Critics of the existing tax rate said Kansans kept their boats in other states to avoid the high tax rate.

“That should bring some boat owners back to Kansas,” Wichita Republican Sen. Les Donovan told the paper.

The boat tax measure was included in the House sub for Senate Bill 83, which intended to clean up technical issues included in last year’s income tax cuts that accountants said could hurt business.

The House approved it 104-15 and the Senate approved it 36-2 on Wednesday.
