This roundup of upcoming shows and events includes news about National Safe Boating Week activities in Ohio and Maryland on Saturday.

Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab are holding a “Ready, Set, Wear It!” life jacket world record day on Saturday.

The groups are joining participants around the world to heighten awareness of the types of life jackets, including inflatable ones, and set a world record for the most inflatable life jackets worn and inflated.

The annual event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council in partnership with the Canadian Safe Boating Council, serves as the opener to National Safe Boating Week (May 18-24), which is the official launch of the 2013 American Safe Boating Campaign. The campaign’s goal is to educate the boating public about the safety of inflatable life jackets.

Last year, 3,993 people gathered at more than 145 events held worldwide to set a new record for the number of participants who inflated their life jacket or wore an inherently buoyant life jacket.

Coast Guard statistics show that 84 percent of drownings in 2011 were among people not wearing life jackets. Drowning accounted for 70 percent of recreational boating deaths.

The Ohio event will be at the Aquatic Visitors Center on South Bass Island’s Peach Point.

Members of Coast Guard Sector Baltimore, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Maryland Natural Resources Police and the U.S. Power Squadrons are scheduled to sponsor a National Safe Boating Week opening event on Saturday at the Annapolis, Md., city dock.

There will be boating safety exhibits, interactive booths and opportunities to schedule a free vessel safety check and boater safety classes.

During the vessel safety checks, examiners will suggest ways to bring a boat into compliance, but will not report any violations found at the check. Examiners can provide safe boating literature and advice.
