Coast Guard Foundation hands out scholarships

The Coast Guard Foundation announced the recipients of its 2013 and 2014 college scholarship program, which supports the higher education goals of enlisted Coast Guard members’ children.

More than $445,000 will be awarded to 64 children of Coast Guard members attending college this fall, the foundation said.

“We are pleased to announce that we had a record number of applicants this year and, more importantly, we proudly said ‘yes’ to every student who applied and met the qualifications,” Coast Guard Foundation president Anne Brengle said in a statement. “The foundation’s commitment to education assistance has grown over the years and is now one of our primary areas of support for Coast Guard members and their families.”

During the last 20 years, the foundation has given out more than $2.4 million and helped 249 Coast Guard children with college costs through the scholarship program.

The foundation also recognized the recipients of its Commander Daniel J. Christovich Scholarship and 2013 college graduates last week at the ninth annual Tribute to the Coast Guard in Our Nation’s Capital.

The Christovich Scholarship is funded by Lisa Kazor Christovich in honor of her husband’s distinguished career in the Coast Guard.

The scholars honored at the dinner were Joseph “Joey” Heimburger, of Gloucester, Va.; Crystal Marietta, of Fort Myers, Fla.; Kaitlin Long, of Denver; Katherine Wilson-James, of Rohnert Park, Calif.; and T. Ryan Yowell, of Salisbury, Md. In 2009 each was awarded a $20,000 Coast Guard Foundation scholarship for college.

“Through the tremendous generosity of Mrs. Christovich and other donors, we are proud of our ability to help children of enlisted Coast Guard men and women achieve their higher education goals,” Brengle said in a statement. “For the first time since receiving the scholarships, the awardees got a chance to meet and thank the Christoviches for their kindness and support and the Christoviches were able to get to know people whose lives they’ve greatly improved.”
