Mercury angler takes Wisconsin tourney titlePosted on
Mercury Marine-sponsored angler Tommy Biffle prevailed against 99 other professional bass anglers Sunday to win the four-day Bassmaster Elite Series Mississippi River tournament in La Crosse, Wis.
Biffle, of Wagoner, Okla., took home the $100,000 winner’s check and secured a berth in the 2014 Bassmasters Classic tournament in February.
Biffle, 55, began the final day of the tournament in second place, just seven ounces behind the leader, Mercury pro Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala. A last-minute decision to move from the fishing spot that had kept him in the second-place position the two prior days of the tournament netted Biffle two big fish that pushed him ahead of Martens at the final weigh-in.
Biffle’s four-day weight of 64 pounds, 2 ounces, put him more than 2.5 pounds ahead of Martens, who finished second in the tournament. Mercury pros John Crews and Fred Roumbanis claimed the third and fourth positions, respectively,
Biffle’s win was the seventh in his Bassmaster career and his fourth in the Elite Series of tournaments. The winner’s check from Sunday’s victory put him over $2 million in career earnings in B.A.S.S. events.
