Wärtsilä Corp. and Ceva Logistics win environmental honor

Posted on

Wärtsilä Corp. and Ceva Logistics received the Lean and Green Star Award for reducing carbon dioxide emissions at Wärtsilä’s warehousing operations by 60 percent.

“We are continuously focusing on improving environmental performance within our operations, and naturally this is something we also expect from our partners. We are, therefore, very pleased to receive this award, together with Ceva,” Wärtsilä global parts management director Christian Rönnholm said in a statement.

One of the key factors in achieving the emission reductions was the decision to integrate nine local warehouses into one strategically favorable location in Kampen, the Netherlands. The Central Distribution Centre in Kampen is the hub of Wärtsilä Global Logistics Services and covers the material flow from order confirmation until the point of delivery at the customer’s doorstep.

The Lean and Green program, administered by the Dutch agency Connekt in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, is aimed at encouraging businesses and government bodies to move to a higher level of sustainability by taking measures that not only yield savings, but also reduce the environmental burden.

Under the program, companies that are actively dedicated to making their logistics processes more sustainable are considered for the award. In 2008 CEVA won one of the first Lean and Green Awards for its best practice example of a carbon dioxide-friendly supply chain redesign for Wärtsilä.
