Connecticut Special Olympics regatta scheduled for September

Posted on Written by Michael LaBella

New England Science and Sailing will host the annual Special Olympics Connecticut Sailing Regatta Sept. 7-8 in Stonington Harbor.

Teams from throughout the state will come to Stonington to compete in the two-day regatta. The public is invited to join in cheering the athletes at the parade and during the regatta.

The event is being sailed this year in honor of Mike Leahy, a former board member of Special Olympics Connecticut who was instrumental in bringing Special Olympics in sailing to Stonington. A new award, dedicated in his memory, will be given to the volunteer at the event who did the most to embody the qualities of leadership and passion for Special Olympics’ mission.

The event will begin with a parade along Water Street in Stonington at 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, followed by an opening ceremony on the lower terrace of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club. Racing will begin at noon and end at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and run from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The games will end with an award ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at New England Science and Sailing.
