Michigan in-water show set for September

Organizers say the Michigan Boating Industries Association’s fall in-water boat show, the Boating & Outdoor Festival, is growing again this year as exhibitors look to display more boats in the water and on land.

The event is produced by the trade association and will be held Sept. 19-22 at Lake St. Clair Metropark.

Show management has added floating docks to accommodate more boats in the south marina, based on dealer and broker requests for more slips.

“Our winter and spring boat shows both saw growth in space sales and increased attendance, so we are pleased to see more boats on display at this important fall boat show, as well,” show manager Nicki Polan said.

“Boat sales reports have been good, marinas slip rentals are up, and reports of service and repair are through the roof. We continue to hear good things from the industry and our members that show a recovery for our industry.”

Festival organizers said the boating market in Michigan outpaced the rest of the country in 2012 with 20 percent growth and is the third-largest boating market in the country. More than $450 million was spent on boats, motors, trailers and accessories last year, they said. The industry has a $7.43 billion economic impact on Michigan.

Festival hours are: noon to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 19-20; 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 22.

Admission is $10 for adults; children 12 and under are free with an adult. Parking is $5 or free to those with a Metroparks permit. General park information can be found at www.metroparks.com or by calling 1-800-47-PARKS. The festival is sponsored by Great Lakes Scuttlebutt, the event’s official magazine.
