Profile highlights life of towboat captainsPosted on
As part of a Summer Shoreline series, the New York Times profiled two brothers who are towboat captains on New York’s Jamaica Bay — waterfront characters who make their living pulling boaters out of trouble.
“All it takes is a credit card for an idiot to buy a boat and kill people,” Capt. Bernie Schachner says. “But if it weren’t for idiots I wouldn’t have a job.”
Schachner and his brother, Jack, own and run White Cap Marine Towing and Salvage out of Gateway Marina in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. Summer is their busy season.
For the brothers, Navy veterans with a love of adventure and “salt water running through our veins,” salvaging seemed a natural calling, Jack Schachner said.
